Knives Out - 12/01/2019

A Good, Fun Movie, With a Unique Approach to the Classic Whodunit, Carried by Strong Acting

The most striking aspect of this movie (once you get used to Daniel Craigs accent) is the subversion of the expected structure of the classic whodunit formula. By changing what information is givent to the viewers when, it might feel like the intruigue and mystery of a movie of this nature would wain, but instead it allows for the viewers focus to be drawn more into the characters, and understanding their motivations

The ensamble cast includes Daniel Craig, Ana de Armas, Chris Evans, and Christopher Plummer, among many others, all of whom do an excellent job in their roles. Bond Daniel Craig has an uncharacteristic southern drawl that came as a shock from my familiarity with his work as 007, but he manages to pull it off convincingly, and I stopped noticing it before long. Ana de Armas plays a character with a unique physical attribute that plays very well in the mystery, and beyond, has a good developing relationship with Dainel Craig's private investigator, but also with the victim, played by Christopher Plummer. Plummer's character appears in some strategically placed flashback scenes, where he shares a few genuine moments of levity with Armas. Chris Evans plays foil to the proper southern detective and his wealthy grandfather (Plummer), in an aloof yet charming character, whos story is explored rather well by the film.

Overall, I throughly enjoyed the movie, it kept me on edge for most of the runtime, and I enjoyed getting to see some good character development in addition to the clasic murder mystery story.

Score: 9/10
